My work explores the intersection of rule-bound traditional lettering and no-holds-barred experimental lettering. As a maker I am engaged with the possibilities for combining the hand-made with the digital. My experience as a calligrapher informs my understanding and use of letterforms in typographic design, while my work as a printmaker provides a platform for working with layers, suggested images and surprising results.

The elements of silence, receptivity and conscious experimentation have opened new channels for finding meaning in what might otherwise be either rote or random mark-making. I recognize the tension between following accepted rules and embracing experimental expression. Disciplined freedom is at the core of my design practice.
